Maelstrom은 화산 타일셋을 기반으로 한 1024×1024 크기의 표준 맵으로, 2~4명의 플레이어가 대전을 벌일 수 있도록 설계되었다. 중앙에는 넓고 열린 평야가 위치하며, 주변을 둘러싼 용암 흐름과 얕은 지형이 자연스러운 병목 지점을 형성한다. 이로 인해 초반에는 자원 채집과 병력 확장이 비교적 자유롭지만, 중반 이후에는 중앙 지역을 통제하려는 교전이 빈번하게 발생한다. 맵 전체는 대칭 구조를 유지하고 있어 진영 간 출발 조건이 균등하며, 자원 광물과 가스의 분포도 각 진영마다 동일하게 배치되어 공정한 경쟁을 유도한다. 화산 지형의 특성상 높은 지형이 적절히 배치되어 저글링이나 질럿 같은 유닛의 기동성을 높이면서도, 포톤 캐논이나 스파인 크롤러 같은 정수방어 시설을 설치하기에 적절한 고지대가 존재한다. 플레이어는 초반에 스카웃을 통해 상대의 병력 구성을 파악하고, 빠른 테크 트리 전환이나 압박 플레이 중에서 선택할 수 있다. 특히 중앙 지역의 높은 지형을 점령하면 시야 확보와 동시에 포격 범위를 넓힐 수 있어 전략적 우위를 점할 수 있다. 이 맵은 멀티플레이어 대전뿐 아니라 AI 상대 연습용으로도 적합하며, 초보자는 기본적인 빌드 오더와 매크로 관리 연습을, 숙련자는 미세 컨트롤과 타이밍 공격 연습을 할 수 있다. 플레이 전에는 시작 위치의 자원 배열과 주변 지형을 확인하여 초기 건물 배치 계획을 세우고, 상대의 가능한 루트와 병동 경로를 미리 예측하는 것이 좋다. Maelstrom is a standard map based on the volcanic tileset with a size of 1024×1024, designed for 2 to 4 players to engage in combat. The center features a wide open plain, while the surrounding lava flow and shallow terrain create natural chokepoints. As a result, resource gathering and army expansion are relatively free in the early game, but from the mid‑game onward fights to control the central area occur frequently. The map maintains a symmetrical layout, giving each side equal starting conditions, and the distribution of mineral and gas resources is identical for all players, encouraging fair competition. Due to the volcanic terrain, elevated ground is placed appropriately, enhancing the mobility of units such as Zerglings and Zealots while also providing suitable high ground for installing defensive structures like Photon Cannons and Spine Crawlers. Players can scout early to assess the opponent’s composition and choose between a fast tech‑tree switch or an aggressive push. Securing the high ground in the central region grants both vision and a wider firing range, offering a strategic advantage. This map is suitable not only for multiplayer matches but also for practicing against AI; beginners can rehearse basic build orders and macro management, while experienced players can refine micro‑control and timing attacks.
